Muavza (Redressal) -CCA

On the 7th and 8th of September, 2013, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts of Western Uttar Pradesh saw their worst ever riots since independence. Independent sources reveal that over 100 people were killed and nearly 80,000 displaced. Over 90% of the victims were Muslims. The trauma for the riot victims didn’t just end with the violence. Over 100 children died in the relief camps because of poor and inadequate state support.
Though compensation of Rs. 5,00,000 for each displaced family had been announced by the state government, four years after the massacre many are yet to receive their compensation.
‘Muavza’ follows the lives of three riot survivors, Sanaur, Saleem and Inam. All three are yet to receive their compensation. The three resolve to piece their lives together in spite of the callous attitude of the state. ‘Muavza’ intercuts between their lives in 2013 soon after the riots and to their lives today. While they fight their circumstances and try and rebuild their lives, unforeseen effects of the riots linger on in their lives, often manifesting themselves in the most painful manner.
