उत्तर प्रदेश के जिला बागपत के एक गांव गंगनौली के किनारे से कृष्णा नदी बहती है। गांव वालों का कहना है कि कृष्णा नदी में फैक्ट्री का गंदा पानी छोड़ा जाता है जिसकी वजह से कृष्णा नदी का पानी भूजल से सीधे हमारे घरों में आ रहा है। इस पानी को पीने की वजह से गांव के लोगों को गंभीर बीमारियां हो रही है। गंगनौली की आबादी का एक बड़ा हिस्सा, खास तौर पर युवा और बच्चे, कैंसर, यकृत रोग, हड्डियों की विकृति जैसी गंभीर बीमारियों से पीड़ित हैं।
जबकि राष्ट्रीय हरित अधिकरण (एनजीटी) द्वारा 2019 में जारी आंकड़ों के अनुसार, जो कि एकमात्र आधिकारिक उपलब्ध आंकड़ा है, 2013 से 2018 के बीच अकेले गंगनौली में कैंसर से 71 से अधिक लोगों की मृत्यु हुई। देश की शीर्ष पर्यावरण अदालत – एनजीटी – ने 2017 में पुष्टि की थी कि पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के पांच जिलों के गांवों में बड़े पैमाने पर बीमारी का कारण वास्तव में पानी था।

Krishna River flows along the edge of Ganganouli village in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. Villagers claim that factory waste is being dumped into the river, polluting its water, which seeps into the groundwater and directly reaches their homes. Consuming this contaminated water has led to severe health issues among the residents.
A significant portion of Ganganouli’s population, particularly the youth and children, are suffering from serious illnesses like cancer, liver diseases, and bone deformities. According to the 2019 data released by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which remains the only official data available, over 71 people in Ganganouli died of cancer between 2013 and 2018.
In 2017, the NGT, India’s top environmental court, confirmed that widespread diseases in villages across five districts of western Uttar Pradesh were indeed caused by contaminated water.
